A Guide to the Cannes Film Festival
This week marks the beginning of one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival. From May 17-28, the world’s biggest film fans and entertainment’s brightest stars will descend upon the Boulevard de la Croisette to take part in red carpet extravaganzas and to review the newest films competing for the Festival’s ultimate prize, the Palm d’Or.
The film that receives the Palm d’Or prize is decided by a select group of notable figures in film who make up the Cannes Jury. This year’s jury is headed by director Pedro Almodóvar and includes actors Jessica Chastain, Will Smith and Uma Thurman.
Forty-nine films in all, representing 29 countries will be shown during this truly international event. The films generating the most buzz so far include:
The Beguiled, directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Colin Farrell.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, starring Nicole Kidman, Alicia Silverstone and Colin Farrell.
Wonderstruck, directed by Todd Haynes and starring Julianne Moore.
Okja, directed by Bong Joon-ho.
You Were Never Really Here, directed by Lynn Ramsay and starring Joaquin Phoenix.
